Make your phone number tappable

Here is a quick test. Pull out your phone, open your own website, and tap your phone number. If nothing happens, you may be losing calls from people who were ready to dial.

Why tap-to-call matters

Most people looking for a local business are holding a phone. They are in a car, on a job site, or standing in their kitchen with a leaking sink. They want to call, not copy and paste.

When your number is only plain text, the visitor has to press and hold, select the number, copy it, switch to the phone app, and paste it. Many will not bother. They will go back to the search results and call the next business instead.

What a tap-to-call link is

A tap-to-call link is a phone number that works like a button. When someone taps it on a phone, the call screen opens with your number already filled in. On a computer, it usually offers to open a calling app or does nothing, which is fine.

Most website builders let you add this without code. Highlight your number, choose the link option, and enter your number after the word tel: with no spaces or dashes. For example, tel:5555550123. If you are not sure how, your web person can do it in a few minutes.

Check for the common mistakes

Go through your site on your phone and tap every place your number appears. Look for these problems:

  • The number is in plain text with no link
  • The number is part of a picture, like a banner or logo, so it cannot be tapped or even searched
  • The link has a typo or an old number
  • The number is only on the contact page and nowhere else

Put it at the top of every page

The best spot for your number is the top of every page, in the header, where people look first. On mobile, a clear "Call now" button there works even better than a long number. Visitors should never have to scroll to find a way to reach you.

Also make the number big enough to tap with a thumb. If you have to zoom in to hit it, it is too small. Test it again on your own phone after every change.

Questions owners ask

Does a tap-to-call link work on a laptop?

Not usually in the same way. On a computer it may open a calling app or do nothing. That is fine, because phone visitors are the ones who benefit.

Why can't I use a picture of my number?

Pictures of text cannot be tapped, and they are hard for screen readers and search engines to read. Use real text with a link instead.

Can I track how many people tap my number?

Some tools can. If you use Google Analytics, your web person can set up tracking for phone link taps. Ask them if you want to see the count.
